The malaria product pipeline: planning for the future (2007)

A supported by the Global Forum for Health Research through contributions from the World Bank.

This project assessed the current global malaria drug and vaccine portfolios and quantified the resources needed for clinical development of this portfolio over the five years to 2012, including funding for clinical trials and associated manufacturing and toxicology, and demand for malaria licensure trial sites. We also sought to provide policy-makers and funders with a guide to how these resources might best be allocated to advance the global malaria product portfolio. The research involved extensive interviews with funders, product developers, vaccinologists, malaria experts, and clinical trial site directors. Empirical data was collected and analysed and a simulation model was developed in conjunction with colleagues at the University of Oxford.

The final report was launched in September 2007 and made three main recommendations in areas that are likely to deliver the greatest efficiencies, the greatest improvement in overall product development and the highest return on funder investment:

  • An additional $560 - $640 million is needed to develop the current malaria product portfolio to 2012
  • Consolidate, rather than expand, the African network of malaria licensure trial sites
  • Build on the Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap
