Electronic Decision Support Study

Aims

The overall objective of this project is to test the feasibility of a novel electronic decision support (EDS) tool designed to increase the appropriate use of guidelines for the management of cardiovascular risk in General Practice in Australia.

Methods

The EDS tool will be field tested in 3 settings - up to 10 general practices in Western Sydney; 3 Aboriginal Medical Services and a multidisciplinary Vascular Health Clinic at a tertiary referral centre in Sydney, involving approximately 180 patients.

The feasibility study will use a combination of different research methods. A survey of General Practitioners will be conducted to determine whether they felt the recommendations provided by the EDS tool were relevant and appropriate. Preliminary effectiveness data will be gathered by manually checking the recommendations provided by the EDS tool against the current guidelines; and acceptability of the EDS tool to General Practitioners will be determined by a qualitative interview of the physicians.
