Motorcycle Crashes in Sydney, Australia
Aims
This study aims to:
- describe the trends in hospitalisation rates from motorcycle crashes in Sydney
- elucidate the types of injuries in victims of motorcycle crashes
- calculate the in-hospital mortality rates as a result of motorcycle crashes and
- determine potential factors associated with the severity of motorcycle related injuries.
Methods
Data on motorbike crashes during a 10 year period will be examined in this study
In addition, data on motorcycle ownership and fatalities over the same time period were obtained from Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW.
A descriptive study was also conducted in the Sydney metropolitan area. All seriously injured (ISS e 16) riders and/or pillions following a motorcycle crash and were admitted to the four level I trauma centres in the area from 1st January 2002 to 30th June 2004 (2 year period) were included. In addition, a 10% random sample of those with mild motorcycle crash related injuries (ISS < 16) from the same centres over the same time period were studied.
Status/Results
Data analysis is now complete and the results will be published soon.
