Burden of Fatal and Non-fatal Injury in Rural Andhra Pradesh, India

Background

Little is known about the full impact of injury in rural Andhra Pradesh

India is the second most populous country in the world with 70% of its population residing in villages. Data regarding burden of injury in India are limited to large urban cities or are hospital-based and have small sample sizes referring to only one type of injury.

Andhra Pradesh is a middle ranking state in India in terms of socio-economic and health statistics. Little is known about the full profile or impact of injury in rural Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra Pradesh Rural Health Initiative provides healthcare in Andhra Pradesh villages. A key initiative within the initiative is examining the disease burden at the village level so that effective interventions can be introduced in the healthcare system.

Aims

To assess the burden of injury in rural Indian communities residing in Andhra Pradesh using recently collected mortality and morbidity data.

Methods

Two sources of data were used: (1) A verbal autopsy based mortality surveillance system from 45 villages collected in 2003-2004 and (2) A cluster randomised survey of adults from 20 villages in rural Andhra Pradesh conducted in early 2005.

Results/status

Results of the study are currently in press in the journal Injury Prevention.
