Head of Musculoskeletal Conditions - Dr Marlene Fransen

Dr Fransen is the Head of the Musculoskeletal Conditions Program at The George Institute and has been awarded a NHMRC Career Development Award 2006-2010. She is a physiotherapist and epidemiologist with experience in research amongst people with osteoarthritis involving the lower limb joints and has published widely in international journals. She is the currently Chief Investigator of the Long Term Evaluation of Glucosamine Sulfate - LEGS study and has recently completed the Prevention of Ectopic Bone-related Pain and Disability After Hip Replacement Surgery - HIPAID study, the largest randomised clinical trial conducted to date amongst people undergoing elective hip replacement surgery.

Marlene is also involved in a number of other research studies (The PAFORM study, Status of rehabilitation practice after knee replacement surgery, Inner Mongolia survey of knee and back pain and disability), is lead author on two ongoing Cochrane Systematic Reviews (Exercise for osteoarthritis of the hip or knee; Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for preventing heterotopic bone formation after hip arthroplasty) and analysis of occupational injury from the New Zealand Blood Donors' Health Study - NZBDHS.
