Health Innovation Systems in Africa

A study commissioned by the Netherlands Government and conducted in partnership with the Council on Health Research and Development (COHRED), which is designed to better understand how to strengthen health innovation systems in Africa.

The George Institute is conducting research to develop a more thorough understanding of the conditions required for developing countries to prioritise, quality control, register, distribute and ultimately research and manufacture drugs and vaccines for diseases that affect their populations. This is a complex area with many stakeholders who are not always aware of the complexities of the broader pharmaceutical R&D system.

The project will provide an analytical framework that will aid assessment of country capacity at each level of the access to medicines process, from importing generic products through to in-country production of complex drugs and vaccines. The research will include activities related to such areas as regulatory and intellectual property systems; industry, tax and tariff policies; ethics boards; research and regulatory governance structures and policies; financing; human resource strategies; and community involvement.
