Mandawuy Yunupingu discusses his battle with chronic kidney disease
Renowned lead singer of the band Yothu Yindi, Mandawuy Yunupingu, has participated in a television documentary to help build awareness of chronic disease prevention and management amongst Aboriginal Australians. The program follows Mandawuy, his family and healthcare professionals as he addresses the challenges of living with end stage kidney disease.
Since 2003, through the IMPAKT Study and The Kanyini Vascular Collaboration, the Renal Division at the George Institute has worked with Aboriginal Australians, their families, health services and communities to explore people’s experiences of living with chronic disease. Working in partnership, the collaboration aims to improve access to necessary care and health outcomes.
Hundreds of Aboriginal Australians are diagnosed with kidney failure every year and are still dying from preventable diseases.
The documentary will feature on ABC’s Australian Story on Monday 19th October at 8.00pm.
