Research Opportunities
Research at the Institute is directed towards the prevention of death and disability from a range of common types of chronic disease and injury.
These include:
- Identification, prevention and control of road traffic injuries; musculoskeletal diseases and injury; and the management of trauma
- The discovery and implementation of new strategies for the prevention of stroke, heart attack and other major vascular diseases
- The discovery of treatment and prevention strategies for kidney diseases, as well as equity in health outcomes and equity in access to health care for patients with kidney disease with a particular focus on Indigenous Australian communities
- The development of a diverse range of new strategies for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of neurological diseases and related disorders that predominantly affect older people, namely stroke, dementia, depression and frailty
Current research opportunities for students include:
- Work on large-scale Australian and international randomised controlled trials, meta-analyses and cohort studies addressing:
- Chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular risk - measures, mechanisms and interventions
- Prevention of progression of chronic kidney disease
- Dialysis and transplant outcomes
- Indigenous health - outcomes with chronic kidney disease care, best-practice models for intervention
- Equity and health
- Work on the Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration (APCSC), an individual participant meta-analysis of 45 cohort studies aimed at providing evidence about determinants of stroke, coronary heart disease and other common causes of death in Asia-Pacific populations
- Work on the Young Driver Cohort Study, a study of 20,822 young drivers in NSW, Australia.
